Teenagers

There is a growing level of obesity in teenagers. As well as the health implications associated with obesity, for an overweight teenager social development can be affected due to bullying and low-esteem.

What should I do about it?

There is a link between skipping breakfast and becoming overweight. Over 12% of 15-16 year olds, surveyed in 2005, did not eat anything before school. Not eating breakfast often means that the children eat more processed ‘snack’ foods at breaktime and lunchtime due to an unregulated appetite and lack of opportunity to access ‘healthier’ foods. A healthy balanced diet is vital.

How can Slimavite help?

• Drinking a Slimavite shake for breakfast could help regulate the appetite for an overweight teenager. As   they have a low GI they will naturally keep people feeling fuller for longer and are a great aid to weight   loss, they also have the surprising benefit of tasting great. And, as the drinks are fortified with   essential vitamins and minerals, they may also improve an individual’s nutritional status. A government   report has highlighted low levels of iron, vitamin C, folate, riboflavin and thiamine in teenagers, all of   these are in Slimavite shakes.

• A shake at lunchtime or a balanced lunch should be encouraged. Consider a ham & salad wrap with a   piece of fruit for example.

• As teenagers are not always in control of the food that they eat at home, the whole family should be   encouraged to eat a main meal which is nutritionally balanced and portion controlled.

.• Kiss my Diet even provides guidance on the ready meals you should buy and the sort of things to
look for on a menu in a restaurant.

• Bite Burner is one of the easy to use tools within the Bite Plan and can play a crucial role in   encouraging and measuring the exercise done by teenagers and their family.

• A whole family approach to all aspects of the Slimavite program is encouraged so that the teenager
not made to feel singled out and is supported.
